Death. What do you tell a 3yr. old?

Our family and extended family have lost several friends and acquaintances lately and the talk of death/dying has come up amongst the grown-ups a few times. Apparently, one little eaves dropper was listening! While watching a little T.V. recently, my 3 year old daughter asked out of the blue “Mommy, why do people get dead?”. After picking my jaw up off the ground I thought for a few minutes about what I should tell her.

Even though we aren’t currently attending church on a regular basis, my Hubby and I have always talked openly with our children about God, the Bible and our beliefs. And we’ve always been open to any questions. But how do you talk to a THREE year old about death? My mom died when my oldest child was the same age so I should have been prepared, but the very blunt question just caught me off guard for a second.

I decided to stick with our religious beliefs and not get scientific with her because that seems to be how she best copes.  So I reminded her of how she gets really sleepy and has to rest when we go on a long car ride. Then I told her that our real home is in Heaven and we’re just sort of vacationing here but since it is so far away, God has us take a nap and rest in sleep on the way there. And that is the basics of how I believe.

That was it. She smiled, said a curt little OK and off she went! She hasn’t asked since so I guess that satisfied her. I am SO glad she came to me, her mommy, for the answers she needed. I think those types of questions need to be answered by the parents and NOT someone else.

I’m curious though, how do you talk to your children about death? Or do you even?

My thoughts:
Raw in this context doesn’t mean uncooked. It means natural. In it’s natural, healthy unprocessed state like fruits and nuts.
This book has a LOT of great and tasty recipes using only natural, raw ingredients. The only exceptions to her rule are peanut butter and maple syrup because they are ok to use but aren’t considered raw ingredients since they are cooked and processed.

Stephanie gives wonderful details about the benefits of the ingredients she uses like grapefruits, basil, nuts, etc. and provides page after page of delicious recipes using these all natural ingredients that provide energy and sustenance throughout the day. And the recipes aren’t just limited to Trail Mix like you might think – She even has a recipe for Chocolate Turtles! OH HEAVEN!  I have a hard time digesting nuts but do enjoy an occasional pecan or two. :D So that is going on my must try list along with the Watermelon Cooler (a.k.a. Virgin Pink Mojito) made with watermelon, lime, honey and fresh mint. I can just imagine how incredibly refreshing this will be!

There is even a page with raw snacks under 200 calories like celery sticks stuffed with raw almond butter. So if you don’t have any food allergies or concerns of that sort, you should pick up a copy and try some of these yummy recipes.

Kids Are Heroes. Meet The McQuins

Shannon (10), Todd (14) and Amy (17) McQuin are this weeks Spotlight Heroes. On May 10, 2008 all of them had their heads shaved as a fund raiser for child cancer research. They did this to help support those who have had to lose their hair due to medical reasons. They participated in a head shaving event (organized by their mom) that raised over $19,000.00 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an international organization that conducts these events to raise money for cancer research.

You can read their story and leave them a Shout Out on their KAH page. And be sure to click their profile picture on that page to view 2 photos.

Check out the “after”pictures of these beautiful children!

I am SO happy to be a Kids Are Heroes Ambassador and share these awesome children with you!!!
