My daughter and I tested the “Make your own My Lovely Lip Balm” kit by Scientific Explorer – Giddy Up. Not only did we have a great time doing one of our favorite past times, making scrumptious spa goodies, but we enjoyed a great chemistry lesson as well!
The instructions for the lip balm kit include step-by-step details about the different states of matter such as solid, liquid and gas as well as having you look at each ingredient and inspect it to see which state is falls under. My daughter learned that wax is a solid and the oil and fragrance are liquids but when you melt the wax it turns into a liquid as well. She also learned that by putting the cup of wax inside another shallow bowl of water, the wax will melt evenly and the water will produce a gas, steam, inside the microwave. I love the lesson I was able to teach while making our yummy lip balm.
This kit is extremely easy to use. Just mix the wax, oil and fragrance/dye in the provided cup and stir with the little spatula, microwave until melted smooth, pour into the flower shaped pots and let cool about 10 minutes until set. VIOLA! Cotton Candy flavored lip balm!
