Every year we worry about the perfect gifts for our loved ones. What do I get the techy brother-in-law who has everything, or the glam aunt or deer hunting uncle? (Not anyone in particular, I promise) What do you get your brand new in-laws or a hubby who is SO difficult to buy for? (yes, my hubby )

Well, one Christmas, 1999-2000 to be exact, I was able to give my mom THE BEST Christmas present ever! It was a late gift, not arriving until January 15 but it was more appreciated and more loved than anything I could have given her. You see, it was her first grandchild. And she almost didn’t make it to meet him!

I’ve mentioned before that my mom had Cervical Cancer in 1994 and after massive radiation, she recovered. But throughout the following years, the radiation continued to damage her internally and when I was 5 months pregnant, she became very sick and we almost lost her. She ended up needing a colostomy but the Dr.’s were afraid to attempt it because of the damage to her colon. She went through with the surgery and in January 2000 stood by my side for 15 hours of back labor, to see her first grandchild, a boy, being born.

This gave us hope that she would be with us for years to come. And she was. After being told in 1994 that she only had a few months to live, she continued on with us until 2003. She was even able to see her second grandchild and first granddaughter for a month before she passed away.

So the greatest gift I ever gave was a grandchild to my mom. And the greatest gift I ever received… I receive every year when I awake on Christmas morning and my children wrap their loving little arms around my neck and wish me a Merry Christmas! And while their grandmother is no longer with them, I feel her love and am thankful for the Christmases I had with her.
