SpellQuizzer Spelling Software Review

My second grader is pretty good at spelling but sometimes loses her spelling list before the end of the week. No matter how organized we are, that little list just loves to disappear. For the last few weeks, though, we have been using a fantastic spelling software called SpellQuizzer.

With SpellQuizzer, I am able to input her words on Monday and have them right here on my computer all week long. Plus, I can create multiple lists so I have the previous weeks words handy for extra studying. This spelling software makes it super easy for my children to study their spelling words. It even quizzes them, alerts them when the word is wrong and at the end, gives them the option to try their missed words again.

I like that I can either input the words vocally by recording in my voice OR my child’s, the word being pronounced.  Or I can just type the word along with a hint and add it to the list without recording. But allowing your child to record their own words gets them even more involved and excited to learn. She has been doing even better on her spelling tests since we started using the software and even brings her words to me each week so she can get started!

TIPS:

- SpellQuizzer’s built-in spellchecker recognizes both US and UK English spellings.  The spellchecker warns the user when creating a spelling list if they enter a word that appears to be spelled incorrectly.  Because of this safeguard it’s reasonably safe to let children create their own spelling lists guided by the curriculum they are working on.

- It’s always a good idea to try to make the sound recordings for word lists amusing for the child.  Funny phrases or voices make it more fun and help to children engaged.

- Users can easily export and import SpellQuizzer spelling lists to share with other SpellQuizzer users.  This makes it easy for members of homeschool groups to share their lists rather than everyone having to record their lists individually.
