Supernatural: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray. What family means to me.

In the series pilot of Supernatural, Dean and Sam Winchester lose their mother to a demon. At the beginning of Season 2, the brothers face an equally tragic loss when their father, John, sacrifices himself to save his children.  Throughout the season both brothers deal with this loss while coming to terms with what it means to be a family through humor.

I learned the full impact of what family means when I lost my own mom. I don’t think anyone realized just how much one tiny little woman kept everyone and everything together. But she did. Everyone always gathered at her house for parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. She taught me how to be a mother and a wife. She took care of us and stepped up to the plate when we needed anything at all. Within just a few months of my moms passing, my dad remarried and started to drift farther from us. Then he divorced and remarried again and we haven’t talked to him since. His choice, not necessarily ours. My grandmother, who came to take care of my mom everyday towards the end finally succumbed to Alzheimer’s and is now in a nursing care facility. I rarely see any of the family on my mom’s side anymore. We spend all of our family time with my husband’s family now and never or rarely my own.  And that is ok. Things just simply changed.

But one thing I learned from it all is that even though I miss the way my life used to be, now I have my own family to love and to cherish. A family that was created with the love of my life. And even though I miss my mom like crazy, I am proud of the family I have now and the direction our life has taken. One tiny little woman kept us all together and now, it’s my turn with my own children!

While Supernatural is a show on TV based on things of an other-wordly, supernatural nature, it really does make you stop and think about things in your own life.
