CoolSculpting. Have you heard of it? First I’d like to acknowledge that it isn’t currently for me because I am too overweight and need more than some sculpting. hahaha But if you are near your ideal weight but have a few bulges you need to get rid of, this might be the ideal thing for you!

CoolSculpting does pretty much what that name implies in a non-invasive, no needles, no surgery way. It uses extreme cold to basically cool the fat cells allowing your own bodies immune cells to naturally metabolize the fat cells. It is costly between $1500 – $2000 and takes between 1 – 2 hours for the treatment. Patients can expect an average 20% reduction of fat in the treated areas in as soon as four weeks (up to a few months)  following treatment. So it is an investment but if this is something you feel your body needs, then it may be worth the cost just as any other investment would be. AND it has been cleared by the FDA!

Q: how long has the COOLSCULPTING PROCEDURE BEEN available? how many PEOPLE have been treated to date?

A: CoolSculpting has been available since October 2009 in Canada, Europe and regions in Asia with clinical studies beginning in May 2006. There have already been more than 7,000 patients treated with the device worldwide.

Q: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FAT CELLS ONCE THEY DIE? HOW DOES THE BODY PROCESS THEM?

A: The dead fat cells are processed by the liver which is an organ in the body designed to perform that very function.

Q: WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS ONCE YOU’VE HAD THE PROCEDURE DONE?

A: There is no recovery (down) time after the CoolSculpting procedure. Patients may resume normal activities on the same day as their procedure, including work and exercise.

There is a very good Rachel Ray video on the CoolSculpting site that shows a brief overview of the actual procedure. The lady in the video says that there is NO pain and it shows her just casually relaxing during the procedure. There is probably a little discomfort as with any procedure but she seemed to be smiling a lot so it must not have been to bad! The information I received noted some possible temporary numbness or tingling in the area. They are using extreme, targeted cold so I would assume there may be some cramping in the area but I’ve NOT had it done so that is merely just a guess.

The physicians and their team conducted extensive scientific research that demonstrated fat cells are more susceptible to extreme cold and can be selectively, painlessly, and permanently destroyed without damaging the overlying skin. This process is known as Cryolipolysis (cold lipolysis) and it led to the development of the patented technology behind the non-invasive CoolSculpting procedure. Within several days after receiving the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” (natural cell death) and begin to shrink and disappear. The Wellman Center holds the original Cryolipolysis patents to which ZELTIQ holds exclusive rights.

I think this may be something to look into after I’ve lost the weight I want to lose if I see there are large bulges left. I’m in my mid 30′s and I’ve had 4 children, so I know there will be some muffin top left probably no matter how har I a working out and losing weight. If it is still a problem, then I might save up and try it.

So what do you think? Is this something you would be willing to try?
