Can you list all the toxins in your home?

I have some very important information I’d like you to read and think about for a few minutes. Seriously, after you have read the following quote, sit there for just a minute and really absorb the information. Ready? Here you go:
More than 80,000 chemicals, most of which did not exist fifty years ago, are registered for use in commerce in the United States, and approximately 700 new ones are introduced every year. These chemicals are used in everyday items such as food, shampoo, toys, furniture, electronics, household cleaners, and lawn care products, to name just a few. The effects of most of these chemicals on human health are unknown. Of these high-volume chemicals, only 43% have been tested for potential human toxicity, and only 7% have been studied for their possible effects on child development. Even fewer have been tested for their health effects when they interact with one another. What is this doing to our kids? For the most part, we don’t really know. It’s largely an unregulated experiment—and our children are the canaries in the coalmine.
Did you get all that? Here’s the highlights just in case:
- More than 80,000 NEW chemicals are registered for use in commerce in the United States
- Approximately 700 new ones are introduced every year
- These chemicals are used in everyday items such as food, shampoo, toys, furniture, electronics, household cleaners, and lawn care products, etc.
- THE EFFECTS of most of these chemicals on human health are UNKNOWN.
- 43% have been tested for potential human toxicity, and only 7% have been studied for their possible effects on child development.
Now, I’d like you to take a look around your home. Get your bath products, cleaners and even food from your pantry and read the labels. Do you know what the majority of those ingredients are? Me either. Now, not all the hard to pronounce names are bad. Some are just the scientific name for even a good ingredient. For example, Tocopherol refers to Vitamin E. Ascorbic Acid refers to Vitamin C, etc. So don’t just an ingredient simply by a scary sounding name. But DO look them up. Find out what they are and see if you can learn what the potential side effects of that ONE ingredient are. Make a list of everything in one product, like your shampoo, and compare the side effect information you found for each ingredient. Then realize that ALL those ingredients and ALL those possible harmful effects are in that one product, food, cleaner, etc. If it is something you use everyday for your family, then you might want to think about tossing it out and finding a healthy, natural replacement.
Cleaners for example. We do use a lot of cleaners to make our homes sparkle and shine. Even though I sometimes have to use a store bought product for tough jobs, the majority of my housekeeping uses only baking soda, vinegar and water.
I make my own soap for my family. I do use store bought shampoo because I haven’t mastered a shampoo bar and there are 6 of us with very different hair care needs. I try to fins products labeled as natural and then I read the ingredients to make sure, before I but it.
Plastics with BPA need to GO! Toss them out. Replace them with either glass or BPA free plastics. You’ll thank me later.
Food. There are SO many nasty additives in our foods these days from preservatives to food dyes. My son has a problem with Red 40 and other food dyes. He does not have ADHD but he does have very serious mood reactions to that dye. He becomes hyper and somewhat uncontrollable. Our pediatrician said to eliminate the red dye. We did, the behavior problems stopped. Proof positive!
We aren’t perfect. We still use products with harmful chemicals. They are all around us. Sometimes we go to them for the convenience. But convenience doesn’t make us healthier. These toxins are making us sick! They cause cancer and birth defects and miscarriage. I’ve had 6 miscarriages and they don’t really know why. Couls it be related to toxins in my home and food? That is a real possibility! And we, meaning my family as well as yours, need to consider the risks and help get rid of the problem. My family is going more natural. We are getting rid of one thing at a time, to lower the cost of replacement, and getting healthier!
