Great Tips for Kids Cell Phone Safety

Smartphone, traditional and prepaid cell phone users seem to be getting younger and younger these days. I see more and more kids talking and texting than I would have ever imagined. Really young kids too! So I thought I’d share this article with you. It has great safety tips for kids with cell phones.

Can you hear me now?

According to research, 22 percent of young children own a cell phone (ages 6-9), 60 percent of tweens (ages 10-14), and 84 percent of teens.

Now that it’s back-to-school time, many parents make the decision to arm their kids with cell phones. Parents generally say they do so for safety reasons; they want to be able to reach the child anytime. Cost is also a factor. Cell phone industry experts say phones and family plans are both becoming more affordable. Also, as adults swap out their old devices for newer smart phones, it is easier to pass down a used phone.

But for children, it is all about social life. A Pew study found that half of 12- to 17-year-olds sent at least 50 text messages a day and texted their friends more than they talked to them on the phone or even face to face.

Of course, owning a cell phone comes with possible outside threats. SafetyWeb has 10 tips to help keep your kid safe while using a cell phone:

1. Get Educated and Prepared. Talk to your kids about the dangers and consequences associated with inappropriate cell phone use. Discuss topics including sexting and texting while driving. Make sure you get caught up on the lingo of popular acronyms and initialisms. Ask your kids to save any abusive or problem messages to show an adult.

2. Select Appropriate Phone Features. If your child is under 10, they probably don’t need a phone with unlimited social networking or email capabilities. Likewise, the actual phone itself doesn’t need built-in features like a web browser or video messaging. For a young child, look for basic phones. Review all pre-programmed apps and phone capabilities beforehand.

3. Use Parental Controls. If your child’s cell phone has access to the internet, find out if your service provider offers some sort of parental control feature to which you can subscribe.

4. Limit Usage. Designate time slots for talking — perhaps after homework and chores are completed, or before dinner. Don’t let constant calls interrupt family time. It’s easy for a chatty teen to cuddle up to a phone at bedtime, so check periodically.

5. Consider Monitoring Services. Perhaps your child is older, but you’re still not comfortable with him or her texting and emailing unmonitored. SafetyWeb provides parents with comprehensive alerts and reports on their child’s cell phone calls and text message activity. This allows you to keep track of when they are using the phone (during school hours or late at night), and who they are communicating with most frequently.

6. Wait – Before Answering. Instruct your child not to answer calls or text messages from numbers they don’t recognize. If it is important, the caller will leave a message and then he can decide how to respond. Explain how to block calls from unwanted numbers.

7. Pre-program numbers. To help keep your kids safe, make sure their cell phones have all important phone numbers preprogrammed into it so they can always get a hold of someone if they’re in trouble.

8. Stay Organized. Always keep your child’s cell phone charger in the same place. It’s best to find a central location — like maybe the kitchen counter, or a table by the door. Mark the end of the monthly billing cycle on a calendar to remind her how long those dwindling minutes have to last.

9. Practice Privacy. Tell your teen to use caution when giving out a phone number. Make sure they don’t publicize their number on the Internet or social sites like Facebook.

10. Be Careful of Download Overload. Fun ringtones, games, and backgrounds – oh my! But, be careful. These such features can come with potential bugs or hidden fees.

“Living Large in Lean Times”? Buying glasses online can help you $ave!

Did you happen to catch the CNN episode featuring Clark Howard and his book “Living Large in lean Times”? If not, you missed out on some really, REALLY great money saving tips! And while I’m trying to save money, I’m actually planning on purchasing his book to see if I can save even more. His tips and tricks are reportedly “tried -n- true” by him so I figure I’m not losing much by at least trying them out.

One of his tips is one that I DO know works because I do this myself. I purchase my prescription eyeglasses online. There are 2 sites that I use and I have not spent more than $25 on a pair since I began purchasing them online. I even buy my prescription sunglasses online. All you need is your prescription from your Dr. and your PD number (Pupilary Distance) so your glasses fit just right and your vision is perfect. Then you go online, select the frames and type of lenses or special additions you want, check out and BAM, you’ve saved a ton of money! This is one of the great ways to get the best ‘Bang for your Buck’.

Some of his other tips include wiping the water of a razor to make it last longer. Up to a year according to Mr. Howard! He says that shaving alone isn’t what dulls your blade but the standing water on the blades afterwards. You know, water causes metal to rust and razor blades are metal so wiping them off is a great idea. I’m going to try this and see just how long one will last!

The book has some awesome tips for free internet phone, not purchasing the extended warranties because credit cards usually offer this anyway and buying more than one newspaper with coupon inserts because different coupons are often printed on both sides causing you to miss out on one that you really wanted.

There seems to be some really great money saving tips in the book. Have you read it? If so, what is your favorite tip?

CoolSculpting and the 12 Weeks to Change Challenge.

CS_LOGO_rgb_darktype.jpg

CoolSculpting. Have you heard of it? First I’d like to acknowledge that it isn’t currently for me because I am too overweight and need more than some sculpting. hahaha But if you are near your ideal weight but have a few bulges you need to get rid of, this might be the ideal thing for you!

CoolSculpting does pretty much what that name implies in a non-invasive, no needles, no surgery way. It uses extreme cold to basically cool the fat cells allowing your own bodies immune cells to naturally metabolize the fat cells. It is costly between $1500 – $2000 and takes between 1 – 2 hours for the treatment. Patients can expect an average 20% reduction of fat in the treated areas in as soon as four weeks (up to a few months)  following treatment. So it is an investment but if this is something you feel your body needs, then it may be worth the cost just as any other investment would be. AND it has been cleared by the FDA!

Q: how long has the COOLSCULPTING PROCEDURE BEEN available? how many PEOPLE have been treated to date?

A: CoolSculpting has been available since October 2009 in Canada, Europe and regions in Asia with clinical studies beginning in May 2006. There have already been more than 7,000 patients treated with the device worldwide.

Q: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FAT CELLS ONCE THEY DIE? HOW DOES THE BODY PROCESS THEM?

A: The dead fat cells are processed by the liver which is an organ in the body designed to perform that very function.

Q: WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS ONCE YOU’VE HAD THE PROCEDURE DONE?

A: There is no recovery (down) time after the CoolSculpting procedure. Patients may resume normal activities on the same day as their procedure, including work and exercise.

There is a very good Rachel Ray video on the CoolSculpting site that shows a brief overview of the actual procedure. The lady in the video says that there is NO pain and it shows her just casually relaxing during the procedure. There is probably a little discomfort as with any procedure but she seemed to be smiling a lot so it must not have been to bad! The information I received noted some possible temporary numbness or tingling in the area. They are using extreme, targeted cold so I would assume there may be some cramping in the area but I’ve NOT had it done so that is merely just a guess.

The physicians and their team conducted extensive scientific research that demonstrated fat cells are more susceptible to extreme cold and can be selectively, painlessly, and permanently destroyed without damaging the overlying skin. This process is known as Cryolipolysis (cold lipolysis) and it led to the development of the patented technology behind the non-invasive CoolSculpting procedure. Within several days after receiving the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” (natural cell death) and begin to shrink and disappear. The Wellman Center holds the original Cryolipolysis patents to which ZELTIQ holds exclusive rights.

I think this may be something to look into after I’ve lost the weight I want to lose if I see there are large bulges left. I’m in my mid 30′s and I’ve had 4 children, so I know there will be some muffin top left probably no matter how har I a working out and losing weight. If it is still a problem, then I might save up and try it.

So what do you think? Is this something you would be willing to try?

TLC’s Extreme Couponing. Let’s talk about it!

TLC’s Extreme Couponing. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. But I’ve heard some controversy about one of the Couponer’s named J’amie and about hoarding. I really don’t know anything about the show or this controversy but I am curious and would like to get a conversation going with you all in the commens below.

I admit to being a novice coupon user. I honestly don’t know how to stack coupons and use all the different register rewards to get cash back, etc but I love, love, love a great deal when it comes along and I do use coupons at each visit to the store as well as share printable ones here on the site that I think might save you money. This whole idea of “Extreme Couponing” amazes me though.  I want to learn more, I want to save more money. Although I can’t say I’d ever purchase 100 boxes of cereal or 50 tubes of deodorant, who knows??? I’d like to know how you all use coupons.

Also, I was sent a link to a site that explains a little bit about what the extreme side of couponing doesn’t show you. It takes A. LOT. OF. TIME. AND. PRACTICE. to learn how to do this. I do know that much.

Ok, talk to me people! Let me know your thoughts on the show and how you use coupons!

WOO HOO! You made it to the bottom of my blog... rock on supa-star!
