When Ivy Boyter started blogging as a hobby in 2012, she had no idea that it would lead to a published ebook down the road. But, that's what happened when the stay-at-home mom from Florida began writing her blog, SAHM, plus… Highlighting everything from parenting to her own hobbies, Ivy shows us that she's more than "just a mom." Hear her advice on starting a blog, and how in less than 5 years, she turned it all into an ebook.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF! FIRST NAME, WHERE YOU'RE FROM, YOUR "DAY JOB," AND ANY OTHER FUN FACTS YOU'D LIKE US TO KNOW.
Hi! I go by my middle name, Ivy. I'm a stay at home mom and blogger at SAHM, plus… from Jacksonville, FL. Just the other day, I became a self-published ebook Author of "How to Conquer Your Family's Schedule: A Stay at Home Mom's Guide to (Almost) Getting it All Done."
DESCRIBE YOUR BLOG. WHAT IS ITS MAIN FOCUS?
I mainly focus on parenting, but I have a passion for natural childbirth, so I touch on that as well. I just love to share my experiences as a stay at home mom, so I write about whatever hits me at the time.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO BLOGGING? WHEN DID YOU START?
It's all my husband's fault. About a year after my daughter was born, in 2012, I picked up blogging as a hobby. My husband was tired of me sharing deals on Facebook, so I started a blog to stop spamming him. I enjoyed the therapeutic effects of writing, so in 2016, after our second baby was born, I decided to turn my hobby into a business and re-branded to the blog I'm now under.
WHAT WAS YOUR BEST-PERFORMING BLOG POST IN THE PAST YEAR? WHAT DO YOU THINK MADE IT SUCCESSFUL?
Unfortunately, a post where I urge mothers not to get the epidural during labor gets a consistent amount of traffic, and also happens to be one of the posts I'm least excited about. But, because it's controversial, people seem to be highly interested. My next best, however, is an introspective look at what happened when I used a consequence and reward jar system for my daughter's bad behavior.
WHAT'S THE ONE WAY YOUR BLOG IS UNIQUE OR DISTINCT FROM OTHER BLOGS IN YOUR NICHE?
I try to stay true to myself and not write to please everyone.
WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU LOVE ABOUT DEALSPOTR? HAS DEALSPOTR HELPED YOUR BLOG IN ANY WAY?
I love being able to find coupons and have a good amount of confidence that they will actually work. I haven't noticed how Dealspotr would have helped my blog, however, this interview ought to ;)
IF YOU COULD IDENTIFY THE ONE THING (OKAY, OR MULTIPLE THINGS) RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BLOG'S SUCCESS, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
Making blogging connections that have been willing to answer questions or share my content. I've been known to ask for advice and I'm not afraid to make changes afterward.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO START A BLOG?
Get started whenever you're ready … you'll learn to blog better the more you do it. And make sure to network with other bloggers, especially those in your niche, to learn as much as you can. By networking, you'll be able to stay on top of the legalities and social media changes as they happen.
IS THERE A USEFUL TOOL OR RESOURCE YOU'VE USED THAT YOU'D RECOMMEND TO OTHER BLOGGERS? MAYBE SOMETHING OTHER BLOGGERS MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT?
Basically Pinterest… but doing Pinterest right! Signing up for Rich Pins, creating great images using software like Canva, and being really descriptive! Pinterest is my top referrer when it comes to traffic.
TELL US ABOUT THE MOST EXHILARATING MOMENT YOU'VE EXPERIENCED AS A BLOGGER?
I began working on content that flowed into more content. When I finally got everything written, I realized I had a potential ebook. So, I just published my ebook on Amazon! How to Conquer Your Family's Schedule: A Stay at Home Mom's Guide to (Almost) Getting it All Done is a book to help parents with time management! That's scary and exciting at the same time!
WHICH MAJOR BLOGGER OR INFLUENCER DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?
Herchel from Gym Craft Laundry. She's been extremely helpful and has always been willing and ready to answer any and all questions I've ever had. Not only do I consider her successful, but she's willing to take time out of her own day to help others succeed.
HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED A MOMENT WHEN YOU WANTED TO QUIT BLOGGING? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
I do quite often. Most of the time it's because I'm not seeing income for a period of time. Others because things get messed up on my site. I love writing and honestly, I love learning about all the aspects surrounding blogging. But, it can get overwhelming being the only person doing every function of the job. To overcome it, I remind myself that writing is a creative outlet of expression for me to be more than a mom. I'm building skills and knowledge and I didn't start my blogging adventure to make money. I need to just enjoy it!
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW?
I don't want much in the way of TV. If my husband's not home, the TV isn't on. But, he's got me watching "Shameless" on Netflix. Or, I'll occasionally watch the new "Top Gear" on Amazon, but it's not as funny as the original.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SNACK?
Kind bars … they're gluten and dairy free.
IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANYONE, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
I wish I could have dinner with my Granny. She passed away when I was young and I remember she was always so sweet and kind. I'd love to have gotten to know her better.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD?
I can't really think of much more. If you ever wanted to know something, I always encourage people to ask away :)
