Love on the Line by Deeanne Gist. @Litfuse Book Tour Review.

As a product reviewer/book reviewer, I get access to loads of great new products and books. I just finished reading “Love on the Line” by Deanne Gist, historical romance author. Historical romance is, by far, my favorite genre of novels and Deeanne now has a brand new fan!

Rural switchboard operator Georgie Gail is proud of her independence in a man’s world . . . which makes it twice as vexing when the telephone company sends a man to look over her shoulder.

Dashing Luke Palmer is more than he appears though. He’s a Texas Ranger working undercover to infiltrate a notorious gang of train robbers. Repairing telephones and tangling with this tempestuous woman is the last thing he wants to do. But when his stakeout puts Georgie in peril, he realizes more than his job is on the line.

When I first started reading “Love on the Line” I immediately became engrossed and didn’t want to put it down. In the beginning you think you are going to be reading a novel all about the Comer Gang and their shenanigans , and while it is about them, the main story is set around Lucious Landrem a.k.a Luke Palmer and Georgie Gail and their possible budding romance. Georgie is likeable from the start with her headstrong, independent nature mixed with tenderness. She is young and beautiful but takes everything thrown her way with maturity. Lucious is your typically cast lead character with gorgeous blue eyes, curls, broad shoulders and white Stetson hat, yet we also get to know him as (still very handsome) Luke the troubleman in his overalls and clean shaven face. Set in the early 1900’s in Brenham, Texas, we get to see glimpses of the old west and it’s notorious gang’s along with a bit of modern technology like telephone’s and the occasional automobile. Georgie’s life as a telephone operator doesn’t leave her much time for social engagements so we get a wonderful lesson in bird’s and their nature along with the story. She describes the scenery and the characters in a way that make you actually visualize the entire story as you read along. I could easily see this book as a movie. It is written so well that everything really flows together beautifully.

There are many twists in the story as it delves into each characters past and we see that not all the gang members are “bad to the bone” just as not all the lawmen are courageous in the face of danger. We get to see arrogant Texas Ranger “Luscious” Lucious Landrem show compassion and tenderness and we get to see Georgie show as much strength and courage as any man. I really, really love how the story unfolds. It isn’t rushed but it doesn’t drag on forever and then just leave you hanging at the end, with no mention of a sequel, like some of the novels I’ve read. When the main story ends, there is a nice epilogue to round out the story and give it closure. I like stories that don’t leave me guessing.

Deeanne Gist did quite a bit of research for this novel as well. She based her characters on real people and real Ranger’s and took bits of their own experiences to create the story. All of the train robberies outlined in this book really happened with only the slightest of changes to make them flow in to the storyline. I was very excited to read that and imagine what it must have been like to live their lives and have the experiences that they did. I can’ honestly say that I have another new favorite author to add to my list and another favorite novel to add to my library!
