Every summer the same advisory rolls out across the West. The air turns brown, and public health officials tell everyone to head inside and shut the windows. Southwest Idaho’s Treasure Valley spent stretches of this July under exactly that guidance, with Boise, Nampa and Twin Falls all recording air in the very unhealthy category and the city of Caldwell closing its public pool once the index climbed past 200.
Most of us follow that advice without thinking much about whether it’s working. Close the windows, run the purifier, wait it out. What doesn’t get said often enough is that going inside protects some families a lot more than others, and the difference has very little to do with luck.

Two houses, the same smoke, completely different air
The EPA has measured what actually happens indoors when smoke settles over a region. With doors and windows closed and no air cleaner running, indoor smoke levels during wildfire events typically land around 55 to 60 percent of what’s outside. That’s the average. The range across individual homes runs from as low as 30 percent to as high as 100 percent.
Sit with that spread for a second. A house at the bottom of it cuts your family’s exposure by two thirds. A house at the top does essentially nothing, and you’re breathing the same air you’d breathe standing in the driveway. The agency also found that newer homes and homes with air conditioning tend to hold outdoor pollution out more effectively than older ones, which points squarely at the building envelope as the variable that matters.
So the useful question changes. Nobody needs to be told to shut the door. What’s worth knowing is whether your shut doors are actually sealing.
Doors are the biggest moving part of your house
An exterior door is a hole cut through your wall with a slab hung inside it, and that slab has to seal on all four sides. Every one of those sides depends on a part that wears out. Compression weatherstripping runs down the jambs. A sweep closes the gap at the floor. A threshold rises to meet the sweep. Hinges hold the whole thing square in the opening.
Walls and roofs sit still. Doors get slammed, kicked open with a full laundry basket, and pulled shut by the wind a hundred times a week. Foam weatherstripping compresses permanently after a few seasons and stops springing back. Sweeps tear on carpet transitions. Thresholds loosen. Hinge screws back out of the jamb a quarter turn at a time until the slab hangs slightly low on the latch side. None of that announces itself. You just end up with a door that closes and latches and still passes air.
Two tests find the problem in about five minutes. On a dark evening, have someone stand outside with a flashlight and trace the perimeter of the door while you watch from inside. Any daylight you can see is a hole smoke can use. Then close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out with no drag at all, the weatherstripping isn’t compressing at that spot. Repeat at the top, at both hinges, at the strike, and at the bottom corners. The results usually aren’t uniform, and where they differ tells you a lot.
The fixes, in the order worth doing them
Start at the floor. On most exterior doors the largest single gap sits under the slab, and a new sweep plus an adjusted threshold costs very little and takes an afternoon. Move up to the jambs next and replace crushed compression weatherstripping with fresh V-strip or bulb seal, making sure it stays in contact with the slab all the way around when the door is latched.
Then handle the seam where the door frame meets your siding. That joint doesn’t move, so it wants caulk rather than weatherstripping, and it’s a spot people skip constantly because trim hides it. While you’re there, seal around the doorbell, the exterior light fixture, and any penetration within a foot or so of the frame.
When sealing stops being the answer
Sometimes the dollar bill test comes back wildly inconsistent, tight at the hinges and loose across the entire top, or the daylight gap tapers from wide to nothing as it crosses the head of the door. That pattern means the slab no longer hangs square inside the frame, and no amount of new weatherstripping fixes geometry. The same goes for a wood door that’s swollen, delaminated, or rotting at the bottom rail, and for the hollow builder-grade slabs that went into a lot of Treasure Valley houses during the fast-growth years. A proper exterior door installation in the Treasure Valley involves checking the opening for plumb and square, shimming the frame back into alignment, and setting the new unit so the weatherstripping makes even contact on every side, which is the whole reason a new door seals better than an old one. Dropping a replacement slab into a racked opening reproduces the original leak with nicer hardware.
What to do when the door isn’t yours
Renters run into a wall here, because the door belongs to somebody else and permanent modifications usually aren’t allowed. Removable options still help more than nothing. A weighted draft stopper across the bottom cuts the biggest gap. Tension-mounted seals and adhesive strips that peel cleanly handle the jambs on a temporary basis. There are also insulation options that renters can install without touching the structure, which matter during smoke season for the same reason they matter in January. Anything that slows air movement through the envelope slows particle movement too.
It’s also worth putting the request in writing to your landlord. Worn weatherstripping is a maintenance item, and framing it as an energy cost usually gets a faster response than framing it as air quality.
The rest of the openings
Doors get the attention because they move, but windows leak in their own way. When you see fogging or condensation trapped between the panes, you’re looking at broken seals between window panes and a unit that has already lost its gas fill. That failure costs you on heating and cooling year round, and during a smoke event it means a window that isn’t performing anywhere near its rating.
Your HVAC system deserves a look on the same afternoon. If your air handler or window unit has a fresh air intake, close it and set the system to recirculate. Move up to a filter rated MERV 13 or better during smoke season and switch the thermostat fan from auto to on so air keeps cycling through it. EPA research puts the benefit of that combination at roughly a 50 percent reduction in indoor fine particles, and even an ordinary low-efficiency filter running continuously trims about 24 percent.
Check the number, not the sky
Smoke plays tricks on the eye. Low sun at either end of the day makes a mild haze look apocalyptic, and a flat gray afternoon can hide genuinely dangerous conditions. Idaho’s environmental agency collects hourly data from more than 30 stations around the state and converts it into a NowCast index that shortens its averaging window when conditions shift quickly, which is exactly what happens as a plume arrives. Pulling up real-time readings from Idaho’s monitoring stations beats guessing from the porch, and it tells you when a window of clean air has opened up so you can flush the house out before the next round arrives.
One last thing that surprises people. Treasure Valley air quality also degrades in the cold months, when winter inversions trap a lid of warm air over the valley and hold pollution near the ground for days. The door you seal in August keeps working in January, and the heating bill drops along with the particle count. That’s a rare case where the health project and the household budget project turn out to be the same project.
