How To Quickly And Easily Clean Your Microwave With Vinegar

Cleaning my microwave is something that is always on my to-do list. Not that I don’t ever get it done. I clean it regularly, but someone (a.k.a kids) always heat things and forget to cover them with a paper towel, so there’s always a mess. Food explosions in the top of my microwave. Bits of potato, soup, ravioli, and egg. You name it. I have a method that takes the chore out of cleaning your microwave. It is simple and quick and doesn’t include much elbow grease, if any. This method uses plain ole white vinegar and a sponge to quickly and easily clean your microwave with vinegar.

How to quickly clean your microwave with white vinegar

You will need to gather 3 or 4 things to quickly clean your microwave with vinegar.

You will need the following:

  1. Canning jar, large mug or glass bowl
  2.  1 cup White Vinegar
  3. 1 TBSP Lemon Juice (optional)
  4. Sponge
  5. Paper Towels

To clean your microwave, place 1 cup white vinegar into a canning jar, large mug or a glass bowl.(TIP: Always use glass and NOT plastic)  It needs to be large enough to hold the liquid with a little room at the top so it won’t bubble over. I prefer to use a small canning jar.

To the vinegar, add 1 TBSP lemon juice. This is optional but it leaves a nice, lemony scent behind and also aids in the cleaning process so I do recommend it.

Place the jar of liquid in your microwave and heat for 5 minutes.  Let stand in microwave for 1 minute.

After one minute, open your microwave and remove the jar.

THIS GETS VERY HOT!!!!

It gets super hot so please use caution when removing the container from the microwave. Always use an oven mitt or pot holder!

Now, simply use a sponge and/or paper towels to wipe out the, now softened, gunk form inside your microwave.

BONUS CLEANING TIP:

Here’s a bonus cleaning tip for you! While your vinegar, lemon juice is heating in the microwave, sprinkle 2 TBSP baking soda into your sink and shower drains. Once the microwave stops, use the hot vinegar (wearing an oven mitt) to bubble out the gunk in your drains. The vinegar and baking soda will fizz and bubble, breaking up the gunk. Then follow with very hot water. You can also use this method to clean your drains each time you de-scale your coffee maker with white vinegar. Use the hot vinegar in the drain with the baking soda. Then follow it with the hot water used to rinse the coffee maker.
