Can you believe summer break is almost over and it’s already time for back to school preparations? This summer has flown right by. This year, I’ll have kids in many different schools so there is a lot of organization that needs to be done to make sure everyone gets there on time and with every thing they need. I also have to make sure that each child knows and understands their school’s rules. So, once I get the Code OF Conduct book for the new school year,  I also make up a list of school rules to hang on the refrigerator to give them a little reminder each morning before they head out the door. Rules like “No Cell Phones Out During School Hours”. I do want my kids to take a cell phone to school with them in case of emergency though. So that means they have to keep it locked up and safe.

This last weekend I sat down and prepared a list of all the school supplies we need. I receive lists from the kids schools in the mail and then I make up one giant list so I’m not going back and forth between several different lists. (Download a printable supply list below this paragraph!) Then, when we get home, I sort it all and make up the kids “Back To School Bags” with all their supplies. For my middle and high school kids, their regular lockers have built in locks but we need padlocks for their gym lockers and I will only buy Master Lock brand locks. A lock is one thing I won’t skimp on. I want a product that I trust to keep their belongings safe.

Did You Know?

  • More than half of North American students don’t use a locker to store their belongings – most, opting to carry their belongings with them all day.*
  • Nearly half of North American parents admitted that their child has had an item stolen from them at school, with the most valuable being their cell phone.*

*Survey conducted by Survey Monkey in May 2014 among Americans representative of a National U.S. Census

Our middle school requires students to leave all back packs and large purses in their locker at all times throughout the school day. They are only permitted to carry books for each class at one time. They also only give the kids 4 minutes between classes to go to their locker, use the restroom, etc. It’s crazy. Anyway, the locker and phone rules means keeping cell phones in their locker at all times. The lock on the locker may not be sufficient so I like for my kids to use a Master Lock product like the SafeSpace™ Portable Safe. They can keep their phone, extra cash, a house key, etc. in there.

It also has an integrated cable so it can be hooked onto their locker, bike, etc. The cable is also secured with the pass lock. I love that it is integrated into the design so they don’t have to carry a separate cable but it can be wrapped around the perimeter of the Safe Space and secured in place and out of the way if/when you’re not using it.

This unit only costs around $20. ($19.99)

I also LOVE the Master Lock dialSpeed Digital Combination Lock. It features an electronic light-up keypad with a unique online Backup Master Code so if you forget your code, it’s stored safely for online retrieval. You can also store passwords and documents in the online Master Lock Vault. Along with the primary master code, it also allows for 3 additional guest codes that you can reset at any time along with a low battery reminder. This lock is for indoor use only and has a larger shackle clearance so it would be great for lockers that allow you to use your own lock.

Did You Know?

In 2010, Master Lock reinvented the traditional padlock with the introduction of the Speed Dial – the first padlock that opens on directional movements (up, down, left, right) instead of the traditional rotary dial. In 2012, the brand topped itself again with the release of the first-ever digital padlock called the dialSpeed. This year, Master Lock back-to-school products feature new colors inspired by the fall 2014 PANTONE® Fashion Color Report

Master Lock offers so many security solutions that are great for Back To School including more products like:

1500iD Speed Dial™ Set-Your-Own Combination Lock: Your student’s locker never looked this good. Up, down, left, right – help them remember their combo without a fight. New this year: a stylish metallic purple design.

5900D SafeSpace™ Laptop Computer Lock: Delivering peace-of-mind for college bound students, the SafeSpace allows you to walk away from your laptop without your laptop “walking away” from you.

I really need to check out that SafeSpace™ Laptop Computer Lock!
