Hiking combines some of the most beneficial exercise you could ever do (brisk walking), with amazing, scenic views of the great outdoors. When you’re itching to just put some shorts on, sling a bag over your shoulder, and go for a walk, you’re clearly in need of a good hiking spot!

And that’s what Texas has to offer hiking lovers. There’s plenty of open-air hiking trails, and gorgeous scenery to gaze over (just as long as you’re OK with the snakes and bugs that might come your way too!).

Because of all that, you may want to start planning a trip to Texas, where you can indulge in your love of hiking to your heart’s content. Here’s what you should keep in mind when you’re putting your trip together.

First, Prepare for Bugs and Heat

As you may have already expected, Texas has the kind of climate where it’s possible to get heat exhaustion within the hour.

And if you’re coming down for a hike in the summer months (which stretch up until October), you’re going to need to be ready to combat the heat you might be subjected to.

Texas also isn’t the friendliest of states when it comes to the amount of bugs in the air during the summertime either!

It’s very common to see mosquitos at this time of year too, especially in the more humid, watery parts near the south and east.

It’s Fairly Easy to Find a Camping Spot

No matter the side of Texas you end up on, you’re going to find a pretty good camping spot to spend a few nights.

A lot of people tend to prefer campgrounds down in the south east, where the gulf coast brings in plenty of cool air (and there are some amazing beaches to explore).

Indeed, camping near mustang island is very popular, so make sure you book your spot ASAP! But you can also camp out in national parks like Big Bend, which is closer to the south west and central Texas.

There are So Many Trails it’s Impossible to Count!

If you love hiking because it’s possible to pick a direction and go all the way to the other side, you’re going to love hiking through the Texas landscape.

If you really want to prove your hiking chops, you could also try the 100 mile hike that takes you all the way to New Mexico! But that’s for more extreme hiking junkies who love being able to backpack in their spare time.

If that’s not quite your thing, however, there are plenty of shorter, variable-elevation trails to try out too!

Of course, it’s best to make sure you’re not stepping onto private land (which there is a ton of in Texas), and stay within the boundaries of publicly accessible parkland that runs around the borders of the state.

Hiking is one of the most fulfilling outdoor activities. If you want to make some hiking memories, head on down to Texas!
