If you have children, you’re probably aware that traveling can be stressful. Although going on vacation is incredibly exciting, most parents breathe a sigh of relief once the journey is over. If you’re planning a road trip this summer, take these golden rules on board to eliminate stress and start your vacation in style.
Before you go
Preparation is everything when traveling with kids. Give yourself as much time as possible to pack, get our washing done and get the car sorted. If you’re taking your own car, book it in for a service, and carry out some essential checks. Make sure you have enough oil and water, and check the tire pressure. If you’re hiring an RV, search online for quotes and compare prices.
Plan your route and mark stop-off points. If you’re planning to stay in motels or you wish to camp, it can pay to book in advance.
Work out where you’re going and how long each section of the journey will take. Children tend to get restless and you may need to make frequent toilet stops, so look out for gas stations and restaurants along the way. Something fun we’ve done with the kids is renting a limo for one evening. It’s fun to do a short sight-seeing trip around a new city in a limousine! We typically use a site like www.limofind.com to find the best deals.

Packing tips
Packing for a road trip can be tough, especially if you’re not sure what the weather will be like. It’s best to take walking shoes and a waterproof, especially if you want to go hiking, fishing or kayaking. Put together a first aid kit, and don’t forget sunscreen. If you’re hoping to get out into the great outdoors, take bikes with you. For beach days, remember wetsuits and outdoor games. Don’t forget your tent if you’re planning to camp out.
Kids get bored easily when traveling, so stock up on snacks and charge tablets and portable DVD players before you go. Take movies, magazines, books and games with you. Try and encourage your children to do a little research about your vacation destination. This way, they can get excited about their travels and start planning their own adventures. Pack pajamas, toiletries and any teddies or comforters in an overnight bag. This will enable you to access them easily if you’re driving through the night. Ensure you have plenty of bottles of water on board.
Creating your itinerary
If you have older children, it’s a good idea to let the share their ideas and ask them what they would like to do on their vacation. Depending on the area you visit, you could try outdoor activities, visit the beach or take a trip into the city. Go hiking, fishing or mountain biking. Book a surf lesson, or try sea kayaking. When you’re looking for local sights and attractions, search for some backup options. If the weather is bad one day, it’s always wise to have a contingency plan in place. You could go to an aquarium, visit a swimming pool or go bowling, for example.
