A Merry Little Christmas by Anita Higman

Fall in love with this cozy story about two people from different worlds.
Franny Martin is an Oklahoma farm girl who’s preparing to spend the holidays alone…again. Then Charlie Landau shows up one day, all wealth and polish, and offers to buy Franny’s farm. Franny has no money to speak of, but she is clever and spirited, and she’s more than happy to sell the farm and move to the city.
As Sinatra croons from the radio and Christmas descends upon her charming farm, Franny teaches Charlie the curious and sometimes comical ways of country life. In the process, they unearth some discoveries of the heart-that sometimes love comes when you’re least ready for it. Will the holidays bring their most impossible dreams within reach?
My Thoughts:
Ok, I am a sucker for a good romance story. I also love stories about the 50’s and 60’s and before. To me, those were the most romantic times in our history. Men were gentlemen, women were ladies and the music was beginning to bud into something amazing.
A Merry Little Christmas give us all of those things in one sweet little book. Franny and Charlie are COMPLETE opposites. She is a hard working farm girl. He doesn’t know the first thing about birthing pigs or planting wheat. But he sees something in Franny that intrigues and impresses him. She works hard, she speaks her mind and she doesn’t let bad things in life intimidate her.
A Merry Little Christmas is sort of a Romeo and Juliet tale. Charlies family is rich, so you know they don’t want him “settling” for someone who is beneath his status. His dad’s heart is rock hard and he makes it well known that he is superior and wants what he wants, when he wants it. Charlie is so different from that.
I think Anita Higman did an excellent job of showing both characters vulnerabilities as well as their strengths. This story is fast paced and I was able to read it in one sitting. Although I wish I had drawn it out over a few days. It makes for a great “snuggle up by the fireplace on a cold winter day” kind of book. Franny and Charlie are funny and witty. The people Franny meet range between hilarious, heart wrenching with a side of gusto (you see prejudice in this story) and down right cruel and insane (more prejudice).
A Merry Little Christmas has taken its place on my bookshelf to be read again and shared with family and friends.
