Few things spoil a family holiday faster than an unexpected health issue. Even something as minor as sunburn can dampen the fun, while more serious problems can quickly become stressful—especially when you’re abroad. The good news is that preparation makes all the difference. By understanding the potential health risks before you travel, you can take simple steps to prevent them and keep your holiday running smoothly.

Backup With Travel Insurance

Travel insurance isn’t an annoying added expense. It can be a literal lifesaver in medical situations in more ways than one. For example, certain policies will cover any medical costs and arrange your return home if needed. Make sure to get travel insurance that suits the country you’re visiting. Travel insurance for the USA will take that country’s high medical fees into account, for example, in ways that travel insurance for France wouldn’t.

Food and Water Safety – Avoid Intestinal Upsets

One of the delights of traveling is trying new cuisines. But cuisine—especially street cuisine—can also be a source of foodborne diseases. Pay particular attention to where and what you eat. Avoid eating raw or undercooked meats and fish, unpasteurized dairy products, and unpeeled fruits and vegetables. Opting for bottled water and avoiding ice in drinks can also significantly reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.

Sun Protection – Don’t Take Your Skin for Granted

Whether you are hitting the beaches in Hawaii or strolling the streets of Rome, sun protection is key. Sunburn can put a damper on your holiday and can lead to long-term health problems, including skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 generously and frequently, especially after swimming or sweating. Wearing protective clothing, including a hat and UV-block sunglasses, can also provide added protection. If you’re traveling with children, impress the importance of sunscreen upon them, and regularly call them back for reapplication.

Get Vaccinated

Before you pack your bags, make sure you are up to date on routine vaccines like measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), and your yearly flu shot. It’s also worth noting that some countries have specific vaccination requirements. For instance, you may need vaccines for diseases like yellow fever, hepatitis A or B, and typhoid, depending on where you are traveling. Consulting with your healthcare provider prior to traveling will provide you with the necessary insights.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Stay hydrated, particularly in hot climates, to fend off heatstroke and dehydration. Always carry a bottle of water with you and avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can lead to more rapid dehydration. And while it might be tempting to sample a country’s local beer or coffee, it’s crucial to match these indulgences with a sufficient amount of water.

Jet Lag – Get in Sync with the New Time Zone

Jet lag can take a considerable toll on your energy and mood, disrupting your holiday. To avoid or reduce the effects of jet lag, adapt to your new schedule before you leave, expose yourself to sunlight when you arrive at your destination, and stay hydrated during your flight.

A holiday is a time to unwind, explore, and create memories. But ignoring potential health risks can lead to discomfort and more serious problems. With some planning and precautions, you can have a truly memorable and safe holiday. Safe travels!
