How to Make Your First RV Trip an All-Out Success

There’s much to love about taking an RV trip, which can be best described as an even better version of a traditional road trip. You get all the benefits, including having the complete freedom of the open road, while also getting the significant advantage of having a comfortable bed for the night. Throw in the fact that you can bring all of the home comforts that you need, and it’s not hard to see why virtually everyone who takes an RV vacation becomes hooked for life.

If you’re planning on taking your first RV trip soon, then the following tips will ensure that it’s an all-out success from beginning to end.

Rent the Right Size

There aren’t too many mistakes you can make when you take an RV trip, but if there’s one, it’s renting the wrong RV size. Most commonly, people end up renting an RV that’s overly large. It can be tempting to get carried away when you see all the amenities that those larger vehicles have, but keep in mind that you won’t just be unwinding in the RV — you’ll also be driving it, and that can cause problems if it’s bigger than you’re comfortable with. Provided there’s enough space for all your passengers, you’ll lose nothing by keeping things on the smaller side.

Be Adventurous

When we say ‘be adventurous,’ what we really mean is avoid putting together a plan/route that’s overly rigid.

Part of the fun of going on an RV adventure is having the freedom to go wherever you please, and you won’t have that luxury if you’ve pre-arranged every stop. While you’ll want to have a general route in mind, it should also be flexible enough that you can pivot your plans should you feel so inclined. It’s about having a go with the flow attitude, basically.

Look for Great RV Parks

We tend to think of RV adventures as mostly taking place on the roads, but actually, you’ll spend most of your time parked up. Choosing to stay at quality RV parks can make all the difference to your trip, ensuring that you get to truly relax and unwind during your vacation. Remember: RV trips are great because they mix both adventure and relaxation; the open roads will take care of the adventure, and the RV park will provide the downtime!

Avoid Overpacking

Part of what makes RV adventures so great is that you’re able to bring more items with you than you would if you were taking a flight. However, that doesn’t mean that you should bring everything. Bringing too many items will impact the performance of the RV and make the space feel cluttered, which can impact comfort. Pack smart but light — you’ll use fewer clothes and other items than you might think.

Bring the Entertainment

Finally, keep in mind that RV road trips can be similar to other road trips: at some point, you might hit a stretch of road that’s simply uninteresting. At those moments, it’ll be your playlists and podcasts that keep things fun!
