Over the weekend, the kids hosted a Just Add Color party. Not the one we planned, but a party nonetheless. 2 weeks ago, when we were originally planning to party, we had flooding rain. So we rescheduled for this past weekend. It was COLD and the ground was wet and muddy. A mountain top isn’t always the easiest place to plan an outdoor party, especially in the cooler months. We were planing on having an adults versus kids color war but the adults were all too cold so just the kids participated! After seeing all the fun, the grown-ups wished they’d played along too! 🤣
So they didn’t get to host the bigger party they wanted to. But they still made use of the party pack, did their color activities, and had a heck of a great time. We’ve already talked to all our family and friends and plan on hosting another, big outdoor party in the Spring when it’s warm enough to be outside longer with the help of party tents. Then, we’ll have all the kids friends plus all the parents over for a cookout and color fun.
At this point, you may be asking yourself what a Just Add Color party even is? Lemme tell ya.
I totally forgot to take a photo of my full party pack before we started! I remembered after we’d already begun so the photos you see of pieced from my party pack have color on them. The photo above shows what the pieces look like nice and clean.
I also have a slideshow, below, with a lot more photos of the kids playing.
The Just Add Color party pack comes with food grade, colored corn starch in three colors, bottles for painting each other, stockings for creating color bonkers, invitations, bracelets, tattoos, etc. All you have to add to it are your white t-shirts, bowls, spoons, table cloth and shaving foam for making Unicorn Poop, and any food, drinks and plenty of water.
Don’t worry mama’s. It IS messy. Very messy but it is super easy to clean up! More on that in a minute.
The water is for drinking and cleaning up, otherwise this is a “dry” party. You don’t add water to the color powder. It sticks just fine as-is.
So, for our party, everyone wore a white shirt so we could see how much color everyone got on them. We did a -pre-party group photo in the white shirts. They played tag Just Add Color style, did a color jump, had a color war, did slow-mo videos, did photo opps and made Unicorn Poop.
The kids LOVED throwing the color at each other. I took pictures and videos but I did manage to get them with a yellow color blaster at one point. I really wanted to get in there and toss some color around. It looked like so much fun.
For the Just Add Color tag game, we played regular tag, but used a color bonker (stocking filled with Just Add Color powder) to tag people out. A tree stump was base. We had everyone pick numbers until the tagger was chosen. I counted down and everyone started running around. The tagger had to “bonk” a player to get them out. When they did, that person was it and had to start tagging.
I’d told the kids to run in the opposite direction from where I was standing, so I could video, but they kept running towards me! I got my fair share of color on me. My shoes were pink by the end of the day. A wet paper towel took it right off.
After playing tag, the kids had a full on color war with the colored powder. They chased each other around tossing color at each other. It was crazy seeing all the colors floating around. It dissipated pretty quickly, though, and settles onto the ground. Again, easy clean-up. Just hose it down.
Before heading inside to warm up, drink hot chocolate and make Unicorn Poop, the kids took photos and did a color jump. There was some flossing dance going on too. Everyone lined up for another group photo to show off their color.
Then we headed inside. After some warming up, it was time to make Unicorn Poop! To do this, you mix about 1/2 Cup of the Just Add Color corn starch powder with a cup of shaving foam and mix.
I think the kids as much fun doing this as they did throwing color on each other! We had big globs of it on hands, face smashes into piles of Unicorn Poop and foamy heads.
There was so much laughter during this party. The party goers were laughing constantly and having a great time and those of us watching were too!
Ok now for the cleanup. For the yard, I’ll just wait until it rains tonight. Seriously, it’s that easy. It’s food grade and it will wash away. For the clothes, take turns dusting each other off some outside, then go inside and change into clean clothes if you’re driving home or just hop in the shower if it’s your house. If it’s hot outside, hose everyone down and then let them change clothes. In the summer you could even just wear swimsuits for the party then run through a sprinkler to rinse off. Soap and warm water gets it completely off. The Unicorn Poop station was super easy to clean up. I just folded the plastic table cloth up and threw it away. Done!

I am looking forward to the next time we can do this party. I have to admit that I was a bit worried about the mess because the instructions mention having a lot of water on hand. We have a cistern and have to haul our water and buy bottled water. So I wondered how well it would go over. But it was so easy and the cleanup was really less than I imagined. Don’t get me wrong, it’s messy, but it’s worth it and it’s fun!
Just Add Color Mega Pak Deal!
It’s hard to believe that just adding a little colored corn starch and letting everyone make a mess can be so much fun.
But it truly is!
