Tricia Goyer is, easily, one of my favorite authors. I first began reading her Big Sky (Amish) Series of books and fell in love with her writing style. While I love her books about the Amish way of life, I was very excited to read one of her other genre of novels, Remembering You. Remembering You is a historical romance and Tricia Goyer did not disappoint!

Remembering You is based on true stories and not only takes us through the story of Ava Ellington and her failed relationships, but also through her Grandpa Jack’s journey for peace and remembrance. It is captivating and tear-jerking. Reading war stories and picturing the men who experienced them is heart-wrenching. Tricia did a wonderful job capturing the stories of the men she interviewed and based the story off of. Their tales of marching through battle fields and into concentration camps during and at the end of the Holocaust draw you into the story. I could imagine the sounds and smells coming from the camps and the joy those men and women at Mauthausen must have felt when they realized they were being freed. I would normally say I can’t even imagine. But when reading Remembering You, you CAN imagine. You DO imagine what they must have experienced. I had cold chills throughout the entire story. You can easily picture what the story is depicting. You can almost smell the scent of fresh baked bread and flowers as she describes Paris in May and the medieval thickness in the air in Germany. I started reading Remembering You and only put it down twice.

About the book:

35-year-old Ava Andrews’ dream job is interrupted by an unusual request–fulfill her 84-year-old grandfather’s last wish by joining him on a battle site tour of Europe. Ava is sure her boss will refuse her request. But, instead, he gives her a directive of his own–to videotape the tour and send it back as mini-segments for the show she produces.

As if juggling these two things isn’t hard enough, Ava is soon surprised again … twice. First, Ava and Grandpa Jack arrive in Europe, only to discover the tour is cancelled. Unwilling to let down her grandfather or her boss, Ava and Grandpa Jack head out on their own. Then, while they’re on their way, the pair soon meet up with Paul, her grandpa’s best friend, and his grandson Dennis. The same Dennis who just happens to be Ava’s first love.

Before she knows it, Ava and Dennis are swept down memory lane as they visit the sites that are discussed in the history books. And even though Ava’s videotaping old soldiers, she can see their youth, their hopes and fears, and their pride in their eyes. Soon Ava learns the trip isn’t just for them … it’s for her too–especially for her heart.

Along with Grandpa Jack and Grand-Paul’s journey, we also get to experience Ava’s own journey, not only for romance, but also for a new relationship with God. While she believes in God, her faith has been shaken due to a failed love and turns in her organized life. While filming her grandfather’s stories, she reconnects with God while also reconnecting with her first love and deciding what to do about her former-fiance!
There is a lot going on in this novel but it is extremely well-written and easy to keep up with. Tricia did a wonderful job!
