I tested out the Simply Earth DIY Shampoo Bar Kit AND the DIY Conditioner Bar Kit (post coming soon) and I was thrilled with the results!
The shampoo bar kit is incredibly easy to create. You literally just mix some ingredients together (dry in one bowl, wet in another and then combine), press into molds and allow it to dry. Then you have these incredible shampoo bars that leave your hair incredibly clean.
Mine was a bit crumbly and somehow, I missed this tip that I found on their website. So, I didn’t do this BUT my bars still turned out perfectly! It seems this recipe is a bit forgiving.
If you find yourself with a crumbly mixture, keep mixing it! Eventually it should turn into a doughy consistency. If you’ve thoroughly mixed and it’s still crumbly, you can add a few drops of distilled water to help bring it together.

Simply Earth DIY Shampoo Bar Kit
As you can see in the video, the kit is a bit messy but easy to create. I have some recommendations for working with this kit:
- Wear an N95 mask. The powders go airborne very easily and can cause throat and lung irritation.
- Use a tray. Working with powders and oils can tend to get messy. A try keeps everything together and tidy and makes for easier cleanup.
- Read ALL the instructions prior to beginning and have a plan for moving on to each step.
- Take your time. I was in a hurry for a Dr. appointment on this particular day and rushed through the process.
I hadn’t read the directions well and had some errors. I wish I’d waited and had taken my time to really pay attention. Overall, it was easy and my bars turned out great!

NOTE: Because these bars clean my hair so well, I do recommend using the conditioner bars (or your favorite natural conditioner) as well.
My hair was, literally, squeaky clean. I felt like I’d used a clarifying shampoo. Once it’s dry, my hair is super soft and easy to brush. But, in the shower, it feels a bit tangled and not as soft. When I use the conditioner bar, it is silky smooth both in shower and after it’s dry. Clay says it feels really nice and smells clean and fresh! He’s not one to ever comment, so that’s high praise.
Before using these bars, I had to wash my hair every day because it’s very oily and store-bought shampoos just didn’t keep it looking clean. I could manage to stretch it to every other day but on day 2 you could tell it was dirty. Dry shampoo makes my head itchy so I don’t use it too often.
I wanted to really test the cleaning power and oil removing ability of these bars and since making the switch to the DIY Shampoo Bar, I can go at least 3 days without my hair looking dirty! Maybe longer but I got grossed out and washed it. 🤣
That is a HUGE accomplishment for my hair because it is oily! Now, keep in mind, I don’t, personally, like doing that. I’m in the city often and I have allergies to all. the. things. I just feel like city pollution and pollen needs to be washed from my hair at least every other day, preferably every day but I try to save on water and ingredients. So I will push it to every other day. That said, it does look clean on day 3 and that’s pretty awesome!
The combination of Rosemary Essential Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil smell absolutely amazing and offer some great benefits for my hair. I know that rosemary essential oil can be used for hair growth. Since using my shampoo bar (about 3 weeks now) I am no longer finding huge clumps of hair in my shower drain! Now, I can’t say for sure that it’s the bars doing that BUT I have recently started BHRT that can cause hair to fall out AND I’m having my spring/summer hair shed and it has all but stopped since using the shampoo bars. Sooooo, maybe? Either way, I’m super happy!
