Clear Communication
From start to finish, about everything. If they’re being vague, or even not showing you on your vehicle what the problem is, then it’s highly likely they’re not being 100% honest or are selling you services and repairs you don’t need.
You should be able to describe a problem and receive an honest, straightforward response about what will be checked, why, and what happens when you book in. If they don’t share it, ask them. If it’s still vague, walk away.
A reliable shop won’t have any issues at all sharing their working processes and telling you exactly what they’re looking for.
Transparent Pricing and Written Estimates
Before any work is approved, or even before you book your vehicle in, you should be able to get an idea of pricing. Of course, the scope of the work and exact parts can vary, but they should at least have ballpark figures you can compare against other auto shops or the industry.
Know what the price covers, i.e., what’s for parts and what they charge for labor, and ask them to provide an explanation if you need them to.
Transparency is important here, and if you can’t obtain a clear answer on costs, pricing, or getting a written quote, treat this as a warning to try somewhere else. You need to know exactly what is owing and exactly what you’re paying for.

Be it on pricing, timelines, hours of operation, how long to expect the repair to take, etc., a quality auto repair shop will be more than OK to take the time to discuss everything about your vehicle you need to know in relation to any work they need to carry out.
Pay attention to whether they allow you to walk away and get other quotes or opinions, or if they’re giving it the hard sell — this matters too. If they’re answering questions but applying pressure, again, they might not be worth using. Also, pay attention to their tone. If they’re defensive or dismissive, this could indicate they’re not being 100% truthful with you.
