It’s two days until Christmas! I’m so excited. This year, all four of our kids are old enough to really get into the spirit of Christmas and enjoy the gifts they’ll receive. We added a new member to our family this past week. A fur baby named Jasper. Clay and I are now the proud parents of 4 humans, 2 goldfish and a puppy. He is the cutest little puppy.

Along with getting a new family member, I’ve also gotten whiter teeth for the Christmas and the New Year. That is one of my resolutions, too, to keep a whiter, healthier smile in 2015 and beyond. I drink a lot of tea and some coffee. Like, a LOT of tea. There’s a saying that “sweet tea is the house wine of Kentucky” (or the south) and that sums it up pretty well. So you can imagine that we Kentuckians have some staining on our teeth. My teeth weren’t extremely yellow, but they did definitely need some whitening help.
I received a complimentary whitening kit from Smile Brilliant (valued at $139.95) and couldn’t wait to try it out in time for Christmas! There’s nothing easier than teeth whitening at home. With this kit you create custom whitening trays. They are really easy to create too. You get everything you need in the kit and then send it off in a postage paid envelope. The folks at Smile Brilliant then make your trays and send them back.
The first step is to mix the Catalyst Paste with the Base Paste. Fold it over together a few times until it turns solid blue. Then line one tray with it. Put it in your mount hand push it against your teeth. DON’T bite down, instead push with your fingers. Hold it in place about 2 minutes. Then remove it, rinse it with cool water and let it sit about 30 minutes until completely dry. Repeat for the second set.
After they’ve completely dried you’ll send them in the paid envelope. They will take those impressions that you make and create molds like the ones shown below and in about 5 – 10 days you’ll receive your clear custom trays. You won’t be receiving the molds. I just have them here to show you how your custom trays are created. Isn’t that cool?
So, once you get your clear custom whitening trays you’ll begin the whitening process. Add a thin line of the whitening gel to the front of your trays and place them in your mouth for 15 minutes up to 3 hours. Wipe any excess gel from your gums with a dry cotton swab. I didn’t have any burning or pain. It did feel really cold on my gums though until I got the excess wiped off.
Once your whitening time is up, spit the excess gel out and brush your teeth with water only. Rinse and dry the trays. Then apply the Desensitizing Gel in the same way. Leave it in for 15 minutes, then remove your trays and spit out the excess. Do NOT rinse after this step and don’t eat or drink for approx. 30 minutes.

I can honestly say that my teeth are definitely whiter. I didn’t have any over sensitivity during or after use. My teeth look much whiter and they feel great!
How does teeth whitening work?
The tooth is composed of 2 outer layers that surround the pulp which is the chamber that inhabits the nerves. The outer most layer is called the enamel which is a clear and hard coating that protects the tooth from extreme temperatures and impact. The enamel is porous which means substances can seep through and stain the inner second layer known as the dentin. The dentin is a soft bone like tissue that rest on top of the pulp. Everyone’s dentin has a slightly different shade of white, off white, or in rare cases yellow. The color of our dentin cannot be altered from teeth whitening. When some consumers report that a teeth whitening product had no effect on the color of their teeth it’s usually because that person has an off white or yellowish colored dentin. As long as the bleaching agent was either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide it will remove all stains over time.
