Untimed is an action-packed time travel novel by Andy Gavin, author of The Darkening Dream and creator of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.

My Thoughts:

I’ve often wondered what it would be like to travel back in time. I’ve always thought that it would be so awesome to go back and witness events that shaped our future, meet relatives of the past and see how things looked.  Untimed but Andy Gavin certainly makes you rethink things. If you went back in time and were able to really interact with people, like in the book, there could be some pretty serious consequences. You know you would alter things. Depending on where you were and what time period you were in, there couldn’t be some really bad changes for the history. I certainly wouldn’t want to take a chance on altering things badly.

I think that Andy Gavin did a remarkable job of laying out the historical aspects of Untimed and inserting new characters and alterations in history. The “Tick-Tocks” were some scary dudes. This book isn’t the Christian fiction that you may be used to  me reviewing. So be forewarned if that is the type of book that you prefer, there is some language and adult content in this book. The hero in the story… what’s his name? I can’t remember… Oh yeah, Charlie. (Inside joke from the book) 😀 Charlie is 15 and has some very adult life experiences in this story, especially when he meets Yvaine.  She is a little “loosy-goosy” and teaches him more than most 15 year old boys. He grows up during his journey. A lot!

The story is fun and adventurous. There is mystery and danger. I was curious from one page to the next to find out where Charlie and Yvaine would end up and how their time hopping would change the future for them. On one hand, you have this great teen love story and on the other hand, you have some quirky characters that you would never in a million years expect to see working together. I love the people that Andy Gavin included in his story and the way that he meshed together historic events with a new future. He did a great job of opening up a storyline that can pull you in and make you want to read more and more.

Let’s just say that after reading Untimed, I no longer have a desire to travel through time. But I sure do love reading about it!

About The Book:

Charlie’s the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, even his own mother can’t remember his name. And girls? The invisible man gets more dates.

As if that weren’t enough, when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don’t take him seriously.

Still, this isn’t all bad. In fact, there’s this girl, another time traveler, who not only remembers his name, but might even like him! Unfortunately, Yvaine carries more than her share of baggage: like a baby boy and at least two ex-boyfriends! One’s famous, the other’s murderous, and Charlie doesn’t know who the bigger problem is.

When one kills the other — and the other is nineteen year-old Ben Franklin — things get really crazy. Can their relationship survive? Can the future? Charlie and Yvaine are time travelers, they can fix this — theoretically — but the rules are complicated and the stakes are history as we know it.

And there’s one more wrinkle: he can only travel into the past, and she can only travel into the future!

A lavish production with a cover by acclaimed fantasy artist Cliff Nielsen and twenty one full page interior illustrations by Dave Phillips.
