When it comes to teaching your kids how to take care of their teeth, there is a lot to think about. You always want to make sure you are teaching your kids how to make those pearly whites stay beautiful.
If they don’t learn how to do this you are the one who will be faced with challenges. As they get older bad teeth will affect their self-esteem since a smile is such an important part of your overall appearance.
So how do you get your children to jump on the dental hygiene bandwagon and stay on it? If you’re a busy parent and your kids are fussy, you probably have no clue how to proceed and you probably want to know what you can do to help your kids. Here’s a look.
Practice It Yourself
There are so many things that your kids can learn from you and one of the things that you should be striving to teach them is how to take care of their teeth.
They are going to watch what you do, so you may as well set a good example and make things easy for yourself in the first place. The better the example you set, the less dental visits you have to do for filling cavities or pulling teeth.
Buy Special Toothbrushes
A little trick you can try is to make sure that you’re buying toothbrushes that have their favorite cartoon characters or people from their favorite TV show. Using a toothbrush like this will make them super excited.
At the very least they will be excited for a few days or weeks and you will get them to brush their teeth. However, for some children, this excitement is long term and you won’t hear any more complaints about brushing.
Check online to see if toothbrushes and even toothpaste bearing images of their favorite characters are available. Chances are high that they will be, especially if the shows are very popular.
Use Educational Videos and Apps
Using educational videos as well as apps is a great way for you to get your children jumping for joy about their dental hygiene. These videos are aimed at making children understand why taking care of their teeth is important but they do it in a fun and interactive way.
They will view high-quality dental work and lose their fears of the dentist as they learn more. Hopefully, this translates into healthy teeth into their adult years.
Try a Visual Aid
Try placing a chart in the bathroom that lets your kids mark off every time they brush their teeth. You can create one of your own or see if you can get one online.
The ticking off of every accomplishment is a great way for your kids, to feel as if they are truly doing something of value for their health. The truth is that they are doing something valuable but making it fun and less boring can help to push them to get it done.
