I love working on educational projects and scavenger hunts with our kids. I learn as much as they do when we work on projects together. It is so much fun to watch the kids learning new things.

Disclosure: I received a Junior Explorers sample kit for the purpose of this review. This post was made possible by Mom Spark Media. Thoughts are my own.

A fun way to do that is through kits like the Junior explorers kits for ages 5 – 11. They are monthly kits that contain a “mission” that your child has to complete both offline and online.

This item is listed on our 2015 Holiday Gift Guide!

Junior Explorers

Each kit contains fun stickers, a mission sheet and small goodies. It is a subscription based service and each month, Junior Explorers receive a kit in the mail. This kit is filled with activities, games, cool collectibles and a secret code. Our kit was the Arctic Mission kit and it had a small, rubber whale and a polar bear. The code inside is used to unlock the monthly online component. But it’s not just about playing a game. As kids play games online, they earn points that are turned into real donations to nonprofits such as the WWF and the Nature Conservancy. So they are giving back and helping endangered wildlife in the process of learning and having fun.

I sat down with both our 5 year old and our 8 year old to work on the mission in our kit. We started by reading over the included checklist. There were cards with info about different animals, two of which were in the kit. There was also an info sheet and another with a word search, maze and other fun activities.

After the girls looked at all the items in the packet they went online to complete their Arctic Mission. They played games, did reports on the mission, read facts about various Arctic animals and earned a flash card. Each part finished earned score points.

Our 5 year old liked the items in the packet and played with them for quite a while, but lost interest in the online part. Our 8 year old really liked the entire kit and played until she had finished her online goals.

I asked her if this was something she would enjoy receiving each month or if she’d only want to do it once. She said that she really liked it and would want to receive the new packet each month.

In my opinion, the Junior Explorer kit would be a great rainy day/snow day activity. The online missions and activity sheet in the packet gave our daughters something fun to work on together. When they were finished, the continued to play with the little animals, bracelet and pin from the packet.

There are 4 pricing plans available:

  • 1 month: $19
  • 3 months: $49
  • 6 months: $95
  • 12 months: $185

The kits are a bit pricey for what is included but if you are looking for something that encourages learning while giving your child a indoor activity, these kits are a fun way to go. Plus, they give back!

Junior Explorers gives back a percentage of its revenue to real conservation projects happening around our planet! They’ve teamed up with Seventh Generation to jumpstart this initiative, and the points the kids earn equal donations to WWF and the Nature Conservancy. It’s a great way to teach your kids about helping the world around them.
