There’s nothing quite like the thrill and anticipation that goes with hitting the open road and taking a trip that can take in all sorts of different sights and sounds. Without question, a road trip is the ultimate freedom.
Unfortunately, nothing kills that vibe quicker than having your car break down in the middle of nowhere. You can take steps to avoid that nightmare scenario, as most breakdowns can be avoided with a little preparation.
The most obvious starting point to help make sure your trip isn’t spoiled by a breakdown would be to get a reliable car in the first place. With the help of bad credit auto loans, if needed, you can get a ride that comes with a service and maintenance history that has been checked for faults before sale.
Even with that approach, there are still some things to do to help keep your road trip rolling smoothly.
Get your car checked by a pro before you go
Before you even pack the car, a sensible strategy would be to schedule a basic inspection with a trusted mechanic. Ask them to check the battery, brakes, belts, hoses, fluids, tires, and lights.
They can spot faults and minor issues early and fix them in order to prevent a major roadside disaster later.
Check your tires
Worn-out or underinflated tires are a leading cause of highway blowouts. Make sure all four tires, plus your spare, are properly inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.
Check tread depth to see if it’s time for new tires before you set off. Also, don’t forget to check for uneven wear or damage from curbs and potholes.
Check fluid levels
Your car can’t function without the right fluids it needs to stay cool and lubricated. Make sure your engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid are all topped off.
Test your battery
A weak battery might just about get you around town but it could easily fail on a long-distance trip. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested. Make sure the terminals are clean and corrosion-free.
Carry jumper cables or a portable jump starter just in case.
Avoid overloading your car
It’s tempting to load up your trunk with everything you think you might need, but an overloaded car puts stress on the suspension, brakes, and tires. Check your car’s load limit in the owner’s manual and pack smart.
Aim to distribute weight evenly, and avoid putting heavy items on the roof, if possible.
Have an emergency kit with you
Even with the best planning, things can go wrong. Prepare for possible breakdown scenarios by having a well-stocked emergency kit that includes jumper cables, and a flashlight. You should also pack some water, non-perishable snacks, and a first-aid kit.
Always try to keep your gas tank above a quarter
Running low on gas in a remote area is never a nice feeling. Make it a rule to refuel once your tank hits a quarter full, especially if you’re driving through areas where gas stations are few and far between.
