Some cats thrive in the Great Outdoors and others need to be kept inside for their own safety and security. If you have an indoor cat, you still need to make sure that they have a good quality of life so they can live as long and as happily as possible. Here are some of the ways that you can do so.
Diet
An indoor cat is not going to be able to supplement their diet with hunting in the same way that an outdoor cat would. At the same time, you don’t want to overfeed them as this could cause other issues since they might not be as active as an outdoor cat. You need to make sure that they have a good diet that gives them the nutrients they need without overfeeding them.
Choosing a food such as Reveal could be key here. Try to work out which flavours your cats like the most and aim to give them these foods as much as possible. You should also look at how you can introduce some variation into their diet – how would you like it if you ate the same thing every day?
Hiding Spots
Cats like their privacy, and they need to have somewhere where they can go and chill out on their own without being disturbed. Outdoor cats will have their own hidden spots in their territory somewhere but you will have to create somewhere in your home for your indoor cat.
Ideally, this should be somewhere up high. Cats like to be high up so they can properly survey their surroundings. Ever walked in and found your cat on top of your wardrobe or on a high shelf? A tall cat tree with a viewing platform could be all that they need, but you should also be prepared to create a safe space for your cat in a place of their choosing.
Stimulation
When inside, a cat will not be able to roam and explore as they would outside. You need to make sure that they are therefore getting enough stimulation. Though they meet seem to spend their days sleeping and relaxing, they are clever little creatures who need attention and challenge if they are to live long and happy lives.
Games that simulate hunting with a thread on a stick are best. You can also find puzzle games that will challenge them and reward them with treats. There are plenty of things that you could do to occupy your cat’s attention, so make sure that you take some time each day to play with them.
Cats can be very loving companions. They might not require as much work as dogs, but that does not mean that they require no work. An indoor cat needs you to look after it and stimulate it in ways that it is missing from not being outside. Playing with your cat and helping them feel cared for and safe in your home should always be a must.
