Packing Fragile Things For Moving

Whether you’re packing things for moving yourself or asking for help from professional movers, you have to know the rules for wrapping things up for safe transportation. Certain household items may require special care due to their fragility. To ensure they come to your new place in one piece, ask your Surrey movers to pay special attention to such items as:

Mirrors And Picture Frames

Take the mirror or a framed picture from the wall and use painter’s tape to make an ‘X’ across the glass surface – this can help absorb shock and keep the glass in place if it shatters. Next, wrap the entire mirror or frame in bubble wrap and place it into a cardboard box of appropriate size. Secure the item inside the box: fill any gaps with packing paper or foam to prevent movement. Lastly, mark the box as “Fragile” and “Glass” with arrows indicating the correct orientation.

Vases And Ceramics

Use bubble wrap or packing paper to wrap each vase and ceramic item. Prepare the cardboard box and line its bottom with packing peanuts or crumpled paper. Place the items inside and fill any gaps with more cushioning material. You can also place the packed box inside a larger box with additional padding between the two boxes for extra protection. In the end, mark the boxes as “Fragile” and indicate “This Side Up.”

Glassware And Dishes

Start the packing with the individual packing: each glass, plate, and dish should be wrapped into packing paper or bubble wrap. Pay extra attention to the stems of wine glasses. For glasses, use cardboard dividers within boxes to prevent them from clinking against each other. Reduce the risk of breaking your plates by stacking them vertically like the records. Place crumpled paper or packing peanuts at the bottom of the box, between items, and on top. Do not forget to label the boxes as “Fragile” and indicate “This Side Up” to ensure careful handling.

Lamps And Light Fixtures

Start the packing by disassembling the lamps. Remove light bulbs, lampshades, and any detachable parts. Wrap the lamp base in bubble wrap and secure it with packing tape, also wrap each lamp part separately and place them in a separate box. Do not forget to label appropriately and to provide cushioning in every box. Lampshades require a bubble wrap and a separate box which should be placed on top of all other boxes when transporting. Mark all the boxes as “Fragile,” “Lamps,” and indicate “This Side Up.”

Electronics

Start by disconnecting your TV’s, computers, laptops and other electronics: unplug all cords and accessories, and label them for easy reassembly. Start packing, using the original boxes and packaging materials if available. If not, then remember to wrap the device in a blanket or bubble wrap and place it in a box with ample cushioning. For TVs and monitors, place a piece of cardboard over the screen before wrapping. Of course, you should mark the boxes as “Fragile” and “Electronics,” and indicate “This Side Up.”
