Watermelon Boats And Fruit Kebabs

Is your family a fruity bunch too?

We eat a TON of fruit in our house. I buy several bunches of bananas each week. I also buy a big bag of apples, wash them and put them in a bowl on the counter for the kids. Then, if they want a quick snack, they can just grab an apple and off they go. It makes it so easy for them.

Another fun and easy way we enjoy fruit it with fruit boats. AKA watermelon boats, watermelon baskets, fruit salad. you get the point. For our daughters third birthday party recently, we had a Luau and served up a fruit basket along with some fruit kebabs that I’d made. They were such a huge hit. I don’t really recommend sharp wooden skewers when there are going to be a lot of kids around though. They tend to become swords and light sabers and have to be taken away. For the grown-ups, though, they are great! 😀

For our fruit basket, I used a lot of great seasonal fruits. I forgot to buy blueberries. That was the only thing missing. Other than that is was perfect. I included, watermelon, of course, along with red grapes, dark grapes, cantaloupe, african mango, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries and maraschino cherries. I also added the juice from the cherries inside the watermelon basket. It gives it such a great flavor. The fruit kababs had the same fruits minus the maraschino cherries.

If you are doing a boat and not something fancy, you can use both halves of the watermelon and fill them both with fruit. That is what we did. And because our party was fairly small, we had one half left to snack on over the next several days. If you wrap it up tightly, it will keep in the fridge for almost a week. Well, I should say that it could keep for that long. We ate it all up in a few days!

These watermelon boats and fruit bowls are another great way to have fruity snacks for your kids. It is so handy and easy to just grab a bowl of mixed fruit. I enjoyed it for my own lunch each day. If you eat cheese, some cheese squares and crackers go wonderfully with it too!

What are some fun and creative ways you enjoy fruit?
