My review of The Third Wheel Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 7 by Jeff Kinney was originally planned to be a part of our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide. After having surgery and then my computer decided to try to die, it fell behind. I would still like to include it as a must have gift for kids!
My kids love to read. Actually, as a family, we all love to read. The kids are big Diary Of A Wimpy Kid fans. My older two have each checked out every book they could find at their school library. I remember my son talking about it when he was in the third grade. He came home telling me about this book that he found that he really liked. And it was the first, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid.
The latest book in the Wimpy Kid series is The Third Wheel. It is just a cute as the rest of the books. It is a little different in that it takes place over two months and revolves around this school dance.
The kids were really excited when they learned that we had a copy and immediately took it to read. My son read it first, then my daughter. These books are around 217 pages so it does take them more than a few minutes to read. That is one thing that I love. It keeps them interested and entertained. They are actually reading to know the story and not just skimming through.
Age Level: 8 and up | Grade Level: 3 and up
There are illustrations throughout the entire book. On every page. They are really cute stick figure type drawings and help add even more fun to the story.
About the book:
A dance at Greg’s middle school has everyone scrambling to find a partner, and Greg is determined not to be left by the wayside. So he concocts a desperate plan to find someone—anyone!—to go with on the big night.
But Greg’s schemes go hilariously awry, and his only option is to attend the dance with his best friend, Rowley Jefferson, and a female classmate as a “group of friends.” But the night is long, and anything can happen along the way. Who will arrive at the dance triumphantly, and who will end up being the third wheel?

This book is really funny, but that’s all a book needs nowadays to become a bestseller. It will make you laugh but its poor plot will make you cry. Jeff Kinney has certainly done much better jobs.
I think sometimes we need the quick laugh along with awesome story plots. Sometimes, you just need the humor to counteract a bad day.
But I agree, there are some bestsellers out there that really need more story!
