To make this diy foaming hand soap with essential oils, you will need one piece of special equipment. You see, to make a foaming hand soap recipe, it requires a special pump top that will create the foamy lather you’re after. You can see, in the photo below, that it has a different type of insert compared to standard soap pumps.
You can purchase one from Simply Earth here or from Amazon here. If you want a fancier version, I adore these mason jar foaming dispensers! You can also buy just the foaming dispenser lid. Mine makes approx 12 oz of foaming hand soap.
Aside from the foaming soap dispenser, ingredients for your diy foaming hand soap with castile soap include:
- Castile Soap (I prefer Dr. Bronners Unscented Baby Soap)
- Glycerin (optional but adds extra moisturizing)
- Distilled Water
- Essential Oils – I prefer Simply Earth essential oils. They have GC/MS reports on all their oils and they are high quality, pure, natural essential oils with no fillers.
My favorite essential oils to use in this foaming hand soap recipe are lavender, lemon and peppermint. These are the 3 oils used most often for allergies and they smell amazing together! I also love using citrus oils like bergamot, orange, lemon and grapefruit.
If you want a super disinfecting diy foaming hand soap with essential oils, opt for a blend like Defender by Simply Earth.

Essential oils are VERY concentrated, do absorb into the bloodstream and some may interfere with certain medications and health conditions. For instance, I have high blood pressure and need to be careful when using rosemary essential oil. So, please, do your research before use and use with caution. With that said, essential oils can be an amazing addition to your health and wellness and natural home. This foaming soap recipe is so easy to make and I love knowing exactly what is in it! I’m slowly transitioning all our cleaners, skincare and household supplies to handmade/handcrafted/DIY. Weeding out as many toxic products as I can is my 2024 goal! Some things I will leave unscented and some will have health supporting essential oils. Either way, we’ll have safer products in our home!

👀 A closer LOOK 👀
- 🧴With this box you’ll be making two liquid foaming hand soaps. For this to be foaming, you’ll need foaming hand soap dispensers. Feel free to add this to your Recipe Box, purchase one on Amazon or reuse one that you already have.
- 🛒 For one of the recipes, they give you a more jazzed up foaming hand soap and suggest adding aloe vera and lavender hydrosol. These ingredients are available as add-ons to your recipe box. Simply Earth gives these suggestions for Earthies who want to try new natural ingredients or already have them at home. You can still make an amazing foaming hand soap without these add-on ingredients.
- 👉 Mica powder is also an optional ingredient add-on. It’s a fun way to add color to recipes, but you don’t need it for an amazing product. No specific color is needed.
- 💧 Distilled water will help promote the shelf life of your recipes, but you can use tap water if needed. Distilled water is found in grocery stores with bottled water. It’s also often in the baby aisle.
- 🌽 Corn starch – I recommend having this on hand to make a product feel less greasy. However, you can skip this or replace it with another starch like arrowroot powder.
- 🥣 Oatmeal is used as an exfoliant as a recipe. I love it. But this ingredient can be skipped if you prefer a soap that is not exfoliating.
- ‣ Isopropyl alcohol – this is a helpful ingredient for popping bubbles that form on bar soaps, but if you’re okay with a few bubbles, you don’t need this ingredient for this recipe box.
